Can a WAF fix PHP2Shell? Mitigation versus patching

Information reviewed: · Published by Tsumira Japan (SourceArt Ltd)

WAF rules and temporary settings are not equivalent to correcting PHP. A measure aimed at one attack path does not establish that both vulnerabilities have been resolved. Apply the applicable supplier correction and verify the actual web runtime.

Different controls address different layers

A WAF inspects and restricts HTTP requests. A PHP correction changes the runtime itself. The PHP advisory distinguishes reducing particular exposures from making an installation safe.

Read a host’s notice for whether it describes temporary filtering or corrected runtime packages. Confirm the applicable plan and deployment time.

One setting is not a complete remediation plan

A setting associated with one path does not establish coverage of both CVEs. Do not apply production configuration examples without understanding their scope and operational impact.

Memory and resource-limit changes can affect availability. An informed operator should review the execution model, effective overrides and supplier guidance.

Keep responsibility and a deadline for patching

Record affected domains, runtimes, owners, the interim measure and how to obtain the correction. Installing filtering should not remove the patch owner or the next decision time.

If immediate remediation is unavailable, discuss continued exposure, feature restrictions and operational impact with the responsible owner and supplier.

Close out using runtime and application evidence

Confirm package, running process and domain-handler mapping, then verify important journeys and errors. Review any temporary settings separately.

Applying a correction does not prove that no earlier compromise occurred. Suspicious changes require a separate evidence-preserving investigation.

Questions and answers

Will enabling a WAF make the public checker certify safety?

No. The tool does not certify safety or infer complete PHP remediation from a WAF.

Should I disable the WAF for a check?

No. Use administrative and supplier evidence without weakening access controls.
